Mr. John Utterson is the lawyer and a close friend of Dr Henry Jekyll.

Portrayals[]

  • In the 1990 world premiere, Utterson was played by Philip Hoffman, who also played Utterson in the 1994 Complete Works CD and first National U.S. Tour (1995).
  • In the original 1997 Broadway production, he was played by George Merritt. Merritt was also Utterson in the 2001 DVD Recording. His understudy was John Treacy Egan.
  • The second National U.S. Tour (1999) starred James Clow as Utterson.
  • The first UK touring production in 2004 had Charles Shirvell as Utterson.
  • Mark McGee played Utterson in the second UK touring production in 2011.
  • The third US touring production and Broadway revival in 2012 had Laird Mackintosh as Utterson. In the Re-Vamped Concept Recording, Utterson was played by Corey Brunish.
  • The 2016 World Tour production had John Antony as Utterson.
  • The 25th Anniversary Concert in Australia had Martin Crewes as Utterson.
